Meet Dr. Katherine Shen

Dr. Katherine Shen is a native Washingtonian. She grew up in Seattle and Bellevue. After high school, she moved to the east coast to study at the University of Rochester and then at the State University of New York (SUNY) for optometry school. During her 4th year, she trained in pediatrics and in ocular diseases at SUNY and then at two VA hospitals in Arizona and in China. After graduation, she continued her training by completing a residency in Boston at one of only two community health programs in the nation with an emphasis in pediatrics, vision therapy, and ocular diseases. During the program, she spent time working and training directly with a general ophthalmologist at Boston Medical Center and a retinal specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

After completion, Dr. Shen returned to the Pacific Northwest and practiced in a group specializing in pediatrics, vision therapy, and ocular disease since 2011. She has conducted extensive research, published multiple articles, and has lectured in hospitals, schools, parental groups, as well as both local and international conferences. Dr. Shen has also been an adjunct clinical faculty to multiple optometry schools and has helped train numerous interns and residents over the past decade.

Dr. Shen is an active member of the American Optometric Association and Optometric Physicians of Washington where she served as their treasurer for a decade. She is also a member of COVD (College of Vision Development) and NORA (Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association).

When Dr. Shen is not working, she is busy serving in her church, going on annual mission trips to Oaxaca, Mexico, and spending time with her husband and two young children. Dr. Shen speaks multiple languages including Mandarin, Shanghainese, and Spanish.

Dr. Shen has been at Visions of Washington's Bartlett Eye Clinic since 2021, where she sees patients 6 months old and up. She hopes she can take care of you and your family.
